The World Health Organization developed ICD-10-CM code U07.1 for COVID-19.

Coding Guidance

  • Use ICD-10-CM code U07.1 for patients who have tested positive for COVID-19.
  • Presumptive positive is coded the same as a confirmed positive or a diagnosis based on clinical judgment.
  • May be used for discharges/dates of service on or after April 1, 2020.
  • Must be sequenced first followed by the appropriate codes for associated manifestations (for example, fever, cough, lower respiratory infection, etc.) when COVID-19 meets the definition of principal or first-listed diagnosis.
  • Cannot be retroactively used for cases diagnosed prior to April 1, 2020.
  • For guidance for cases prior to April 1, 2020, refer to the CDC's ICD-10-CM Official Coding Guidelines - Supplement Coding Encounters Related to COVID-19 Coronavirus Outbreak (summarized below).
