Are there any requirements before a provider can start EPCS registration?

  • Registered with Surescripts to transmit prescriptions in NextGen® Office.
  • Transmit at least one non-controlled substance prescription in EHR.
  • If EPCS is not yet enabled in your account, you must request the EPCS feature from your Sales representative.
  • Refer to the checklist in the beginning of NextGen Office EPCS Registration with NewCrop and Exostar for information needed for registration.

How long does the process take?

The process takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes. After you start the process, we recommend that you complete the process in the same sitting.

Do I only get one chance to answer the identity proofing questions? If I select an incorrect answer, do I get another question or am I required to schedule a webcam appointment?

You are given two chances to answer the identity proofing questions. After two failures, you are asked to schedule a webcam appointment with Exostar. 

Can I perform identity proofing via mail?

The webcam and mail options are NOT either/or options. If Experian is able to the find your address in their database, Exostar determines whether to require you to verify your identity via US mail. If you choose US mail, you will receive an activation code by mail within 5-10 business days. You must enter this activation to continue the Exostar registration process. You may choose to decline the US mail option and perform webcam proofing. If you are only given the webcam proofing option, you cannot choose the US mail option. 

Can I install the Authy app on multiple phones?

Yes. After the Authy app has been installed on your (the prescriber's) mobile phone, the app will allow you to create an account. During this process, you are asked for the mobile phone that was used during the initial Exostar registration setup. If you have changed the mobile number, use the current phone number that you have registered to your Exostar account. You will receive a text message to the mobile number registered with Exostar with a verification code to enter into the Authy app.

Can I install the Authy app on an iPad or tablet?

No. The app must be installed on a mobile phone. Do not install the app on an iPad, tablet, or desktop computer. 

The success message after finalization appears below the authentication code box. Is it possible to update the message so that if it is successful the authentication code box is removed? As it appears, the success message is in small letters below the box, which makes it seem as though it did not go through.

No. These are not NextGen Office screens. The screens that are used during the registration process belong to NewCrop and Exostar, and are being presented to you through an iFrame in the NextGen Office application.

Am I only allowed to use the Authy app or the hardware token (fob)? Are there other forms of OTP?

These are the only two options that Exostar allows.

What do I do if I get an HTTP 404 error?

404 error

You must allow cookies in the Web browser that you are using for registration.

What do the IDP and EPCS codes stand for?

Identity proofing (IDP) = 2 and electronically prescribed controlled substances (EPCS) = 5.
These are indicators that you have successfully registered. They are internal statuses that come from NewCrop. They represent different states of the registration process (what point you are in the registration process). NextGen Office provides these codes to NewCrop when reporting issues. 

Do the name and address on the Experian credit report have to match the driver’s license as well?

When you fill out your demographic information, make sure that your name and address match what is on your driver's license.

If I have a current Exostar account at a second practice, how do I add it to NextGen Office? 

When you try to sign up with Exostar with a second account (when one account is already active), you will receive an error stating: It appears you have already signed up with Exostar. 

An email is then generated to NewCrop and they will use that information to connect the two accounts with Exostar.

What if I need to EPCS from more than one location?

If you have one account and different locations, you complete the Exostar registration process one time, but you must be reregistered with Surescripts at all locations after registration is complete. The process to register your locations with Surescripts is already in place, and you will not need to do anything different than you currently do to get your locations set up with Surescripts.

What if I have more than one DEA number?

You only have to complete Exostar registration once. 

Do the pages have timeout periods?

Most pages time out after 2-3 minutes . The identify proofing questions allow 7-10 minutes.

How many providers in a practice can join a webcam appointment?

Only one provider per webcam appointment is allowed.
