Requirements
Who can transmit a controlled substance prescription?
A prescriber who has fully completed the EPCS registration process.
Can a user who is not EPCS-certified still prepare the Rx?
Yes. Users who are not EPCS-certified can prepare the Rx and leave it pending for the EPCS-certified prescriber; however, the EPCS-certified prescriber must be logged in to transmit the controlled substance Rx.
Open Prescribe, Medication History, or Medication List
- In the chart, select the Medication List tab.
- Do one of the following in an encounter
- Select P > Prescribe.
- Select S > Medication History.
E-prescribe a New Controlled Substance Medication
- Select the Prescribing Dr. EPCS-activated prescribers are indicated by
. - Select New Medication.
You are now on the Search Medication page.
- Search for the medication and then select one of the search results.
You are now on the Medication Sig page.
- Enter the sig information.
- Select Save and ePrescribe.
Note about pediatric patients: You must include height and weight for pediatric patients (18 or under). Height and weight are pulled from last vitals entered in the patient's chart.
Drug Interactions
You are alerted if there is a drug-to-allergy, drug-to-disease, and/or drug-to-drug interaction.
- To acknowledge and discontinue adding the drug to the Medication List, select OK and then select Save.
- To override the alert and proceed adding the drug to the Medication List, select one of the override options and then select Save.
You are now on the ePrescribe: Select a Pharmacy page.
- Select an EPCS-certified pharmacy (they show in red). To search for only EPCS-certified pharmacies, select the EPCS check box.
- Select Sign/Transmit.
You are now on the ePrescribe: Finalized Prescription page.
- Select Sign Rx.
You have successfully transmitted the controlled substance.
E-prescribe a Controlled Substance Medication from the Medication List
- Select a Prescribing Dr. EPCS-activated prescribers are indicated by
. - Select the medication's check box and select ePrescribe.

E-prescribe Multiple Medications from the Medication List
There is an additional step when e-prescribing multiple medications, including a controlled substance medication. In our example, we are e-prescribing a controlled substance medication and a non-controlled substance medication.
- Select a Prescribing Dr. EPCS-activated prescribers are indicated by
. - Select the medications' check boxes and select ePrescribe.

Drug Interactions
You are alerted if there is a drug-to-allergy, drug-to-disease, and/or drug-to-drug interaction. For acknowledge and override instructions, see Drug Interactions in the new medication procedure.
You are now on the ePrescribe: Select a Pharmacy page. Each prescription has a Ready to Sign/Transmit check box on the right side of the page. This check box is automatically selected for non-controlled substance prescriptions. The Sign/Transmit button is disabled until you select the check box for the controlled substance prescription.
