Clinical Advisory
Specific Alert Content, Supplied by Drug Database Content Providers, May Cause Some Drug Interaction Alerts to Not Show – Recent Example: PAXLOVID™
Release Date
February 15, 2023
Issue
It has come to NextGen® Healthcare’s attention that some providers are not seeing certain potential drug interaction alerts of which they may have wanted to be made aware.
Description
Providers are not seeing certain interaction alerts because the interactions are programmed to appear in NextGen Office EHR by the Administration: Drug Interaction Alerts (ONC2015) setting at a more sensitive level than the one already set in Administration: Drug Interaction Alerts (ONC2015) by the provider. In a recent example, a provider prescribed PAXLOVID and drug-to-drug interactions that were level 3 (“moderate interactions”) did not show because the provider had their interaction level set at level 1 and 2 (“absolute and severe interactions”). Individual drug interaction information is programmed by our drug database provider and is corroborated by other industry-standard medical references.
Advisory
NextGen Healthcare is issuing this clinical advisory to remind providers about the impact of the drug-to-drug and drug-to-disease interaction levels in Administration: Drug Interactions (ONC2015) settings. NextGen Healthcare acknowledges the importance of an end user's desire to balance the need of not missing important interactions with the need to avoid excessive alerts. In the example case, if you are a prescriber of PAXLOVID and—especially as it is a newer medication—if you wish to be made aware of more potential interactions, please check your drug interaction levels and consider if any modifications are needed to invoke the relevant alert at the desired level. The settings in Administration: Drug Interactions (ONC2015) may not work for some providers (KI201166). The settings may result in all alerts appearing rather than only alerting based on the provider's settings.
