Potential Protected Information
Patient Verification Data (Date of Birth) Appears on the Patient Portal Activation Print Instructions

Known Issue #

Issue
In NextGen® Office EHR, when you print portal activation instructions for a patient, the patient’s date of birth (DOB) is included on the printout in the page header and the print preview header. The use of the DOB in the portal activation process is a security measure to ensure that only appropriate individuals have access to a patient’s clinical data. Printing the DOB on the instructions removes that security check and allows anyone who obtains the instructions access to the patient’s portal account.
Steps to Reproduce
- In the patient chart, click the Administrative tab.
- Under YourHealthFile Portal Access, click Enable Portal Access.
- Select the desired individual to grant access to (for example, the patient).
- For the account instructions, select the Print option.
- Click Proceed.
- Click Proceed again
- Click Print Instruction.
The patient's DOB appears in the page header.
- Click Print.
The patient's DOB appears in the print preview header.
Action Required
Do not use the print option. Email the portal activation instructions to the patient. In step 4 above, keep the default Email option selected.
